Insurance

Depending on your current health insurance provider, it is possible for services to be covered in full or in part. Please contact your provider to verify how your plan compensates you for psychotherapy services.

I’d recommend asking these questions to your insurance provider to help determine your benefits:

  • Does my health insurance plan include mental health benefits?
  • Do I have a deductible? If so, what is it and have I met it yet?
  • Does my plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have? If so, what is the limit?
  • Do I need written approval from my primary care physician in order for services to be covered?
Accepted Insurance Plans:Medicaid, Cigna, United, Aetna, Kaiser

Payment

I accept cash, check and all major credit cards as forms of payment. I also accept payment directly on my site via this page.

Cancellation Policy

If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel at least 24 hours beforehand. Otherwise, you may be charged for the full rate of the session.

Good Faith Estimate (No Surprises Act):

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-877-696-6775.

HOW IT WORKS

FAQ's

Whether you are new to counseling or returning after a break, I encourage you to ask questions until you feel comfortable. I specialize in couples therapy, sex therapy, individual counseling, LGBTQ+ issues, and trauma and abuse therapy.

The FAQs below cover common questions clients have before starting therapy. For additional questions, please call (720) 336-9220 or email susan@sustanterkhorn.com.

What is your approach to counseling?

I am passionate about helping my clients overcome the obstacles in their lives that often leave them feeling stuck, helpless and disconnected. I do this through a variety of approaches. I’m holistic, looking at all aspects of your life: mind body and spirit. I also draw from Structural Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Attachment Models, in particular Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), to help clients recognize negative patterns, cycles or stories in their lives. I utilized EFT techniques to help individuals and couples access deeper emotions and have awareness of vulnerabilities and triggers. I am drawn to the social justice aspect of Narrative and Feminist Therapy especially within the framework of Sex Therapy and trauma Work and often implement these perspectives in session.

Another important part of my work, especially with clients who have experienced trauma or are experiencing sexual issues, is the use of mindfulness and somatic exercises that help clients shift their awareness to the present moment allowing them to be in their body, observe their feelings and emotions with curiosity and without judgment and show up authentically in their lives.

I consider therapy a collaborative journey and together we will explore your early attachments, how they play a part in who you are, and how they show up in your relationships today. I have experience working with couples and individuals experiencing communication issues, sexual issues, depression, past trauma, infidelity, sexual dysfunction and sexual and gender identity concerns.

I offer a direct, creative and compassionate therapeutic approach in a safe and nonjudgmental space.

What is sex therapy?

We are all born as sexual beings. It is a central part of being human. Feeling good about our sexuality, sexual expression, sexual identity and gender identity leaves us balanced and feeling connected to ourselves and others. If we are feeling disconnection from our sexuality within ourselves and in our relationships we may feel distress and anxiety.

I utilize an integrated and holistic therapeutic approach to explore and evaluate physical, psychological and emotional blocks that might be impacting your sexuality. As a sex therapist, I am focused on working with individuals and couples around issues of sexuality and sexual fulfillment. There is no nudity or touching in a therapy session. Any exercises or assignments are given to clients to complete in the privacy of their own homes.

Who do you work with?

I help individuals, couples and families find connection, healing and personal growth within themselves and with those that are closest to them. I strive to provide an inclusive, affirmative and safe environment and I enjoy working with people from all gender identities, sexual orientation, expressions, religions, ethnicities and lifestyles.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions take place in my comfortable and convenient office in southeast Denver, at 2121 S. Oneida Street, Suite 107 (Around the corner from the Denver Dumb Friends League). The office is convenient from I-25.

How often do we meet?

I generally work with people on a weekly basis. Consistency and reinforcement improve results. If this is not possible, we can discuss other ways to work together. Please send me a message or schedule your free in-person consultation.

What are your fees?

When you’re considering an important investment of time, energy, and resources, it’s smart to do a little cost/benefit analysis. Below, you’ll get the information on fees. That’s a straightforward cost.

I assume you’ll also look at the time you’ll spend, and you might compare that to other ways you’d fill up that time during your week.

A long time ago, someone told me that when I was considering an opportunity, I shouldn’t look at what it would cost without looking at what it was worth.

As you make your decision, take into account the long-term health, happiness, and financial benefits of meeting your objectives for counseling, and the costs of not making the changes you’re considering.

Fees:
Initial in-person consultation: FREE
50 minute session: $120
80 minute session: $150
Longer sessions are also available.

What are the payment options?

I accept cash, check, or credit cards. Payment is due in person at the end of each session or can be deducted from a credit card on file at the time of service. I do not bill for services or carry account balances.

Do you work with insurance companies?

I accept Colorado Medicaid
